Our Specialized Staff

Board-certified neurologists and MS-certified nurses lead a Holy Name staff created to focus solely on MS patients and the management of their disease. By diagnosing MS early and beginning treatment as soon as possible, steps can be taken to prevent the patient's brain and spinal cord from further injury. Patient care is coordinated with referring physicians and other medical specialists to ensure it is efficient and effective, from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up services.

MaryAnn Picone, MD

Medical Director of the MS Center

Mary Ann Picone, MD, a board-certified neurologist, has been the Medical Director of Holy Name's MS Center since 1993. Widely recognized for her clinical expertise, research acumen and comprehensive approach to patient care, Dr. Picone has been a principal investigator in numerous studies and clinical research.

David B. Duncan, MD

David Duncan, MD, is a neurologist with advanced training in neuro-rehabilitation and neuroradiology. Dr. Duncan has consistently been voted a "Top Doc" by Castle Connolly since 2011 and is currently on staff at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons as an Assistant Clinical Professor in neurology.

Karen Blitz, DO

Karen Blitz, DO, a board-certified neurorehabilitation specialist and licensed physical therapist, focuses on restoring and maximizing functional ability in patients with neurologic conditions. She has held assistant professorship positions at LIJ School of Medicine and New York University and has published and lectured extensively on MS.

Stacey Melvin, RN, BSN

Stacey Melvin, RN, BSN, is an MS-certified nurse and has been providing nursing care for MS patients since 1991. She currently coordinates all the clinical trials for MS patients conducted at Holy Name. She believes strongly in keeping up with the latest advancements in MS research so she can maintain a global understanding of the disease and be able to answer all patients' questions.

Stacey received her BS degree in nursing from Lienhard School of Nursing, Pace University, NY.

Reena Matthew, RN

Reena Matthew, RN, is an MS-certified nurse who has been working at the MS Center since 2009, following nearly 15 years as a medical charge nurse specializing in neurology. She provides a holistic approach to symptom management, care coordination, patient education, medication adherence and patient support and advocacy.

Reena is a member of the International Organization of Multiple Sclerosis Nurses and volunteers at health fairs and children's conferences. She earned her BS degree from Thomas Edison State University.

Christine Smith, OTR/L

Christine Smith, OTR/L, is a coordinator of occupational therapy specializing in working with MS patients. She has been an occupational rehabilitation therapist for more than 20 years and became a MS-certified specialist in 2005. She is the chair of the clinical care committee of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers and a member of the exam committee and the editorial board of the MS exchange.

Christine is also a member of the Client Education Committee for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the coordinator of the education committee of the International Organization of MS Rehabilitation Therapists. She earned her BS in Occupational Therapy from Quinnipiac College.
