Emergency Care Center

Holy Name Medical Center’s award-winning Emergency Care Center is equipped to handle life-threatening conditions as well as less serious injuries and illnesses in a timely and compassionate manner. The Emergency Department is designated as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission and has received the highest award for stroke care – Gold Plus – from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. Holy Name is an accredited Chest Pain Center by the Society of Chest Pain Centers.

The Emergency Department staff is focused on getting patients to medical providers immediately. Upon arrival, patients will be asked a few simple questions and then promptly brought to a treatment area for evaluation by a trained triage registered nurse and physician or a physician assistant. Registration is completed at the bedside so delays in treatment are avoided whenever possible.

A number of bilingual emergency department clinicians speak Korean, Spanish, Chinese and other languages. A video translating service is also available 24 hours a day to help patients feel more comfortable and enable them to converse easily with their medical providers.

Specialized Services

Stroke

Patients thought to be having a stroke will see a specialist immediately through enhanced technology, called Teleneurology, a program that operates 24 hours a day connecting the patient with a neurologist specializing in stroke care. A multidisciplinary team of professionals at Holy Name works with the neurologist to administer any treatment that may be needed, including clot-busting medication or technological intervention. Cardiac Arrest

For patients who have had cardiac arrest outside the hospital, Holy Name’s emergency staff is trained in the process of induced hypothermia, which helps to preserve neurological function. Severe neurological injury is known to be a common consequence of cardiac arrest following successful resuscitation. Using a temperature management system, the clinical team is able to cool or warm the patient by circulating chilled water pads adhered to the patient’s skin. Reducing the body temperature helps lower the risk of injury following a lack of blood flow to the brain and maximizes patient outcomes.
