Anxiety and COVID-19

Under normal circumstances change, any change, causes some anxiety. These days it seems that change is our constant and our televisions, computers, phones and radios keep reminding us of it. Worrying about things over which we have no control becomes exhausting.

Anxiety and worry are not good for our bodies, our minds or our souls. Here are some small things we can do to reduce the worry and increase our ability to cope during difficult times.

  • Take a minute out of your day to sit with your feet on the ground, feeling your skin against the chair and the solid feel of the floor beneath you. Place one hand on your stomach and the other on your chest. Slowly pull in air through your nose until your lungs are full. Feel your stomach and chest rise as the air fills your lungs. Slowly let the air out of your mouth. Feel as your hands gently move with your exhalation.

  • Keep your Emotional Flashlight on this minute right now. Sometimes anxiety comes wrapped up in "what-ifs". Instead of worrying about tomorrow, stay in here and now. Ask yourself, "In this minute right now, am I safe?" Breathe. Look around you. Most likely the answer will be "Yes. In this minute right now, I am safe."

  • Holy Name Medical Center has a free, open COVID 19 group that meets online called T.O.G.E.T.H.E.R. We Care. You can learn more about it on the HNMC website https://holyname.org/covid19support/. You can also look into your place of worship or school and see if there are groups that are meeting online.

  • Finally, if you are finding that your worrying is interfering with your being able to carry on your normal daily chores, please seek some professional help.

Every storm runs out of rain, and together we will get through this pandemic. We know how to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our community: wear a mask, wash our hands and keep six feet between us. What is most important at this time is that we take care of ourselves and those we love. Know that we, at Holy Name, are here for you — Holy Name, a different kind of place.
