Choosing Your Medicare Plan

Understanding your current Medicare insurance and learning what new plans are being offered for the coming year will help you decide the type of coverage that is best for you. Insurance counselors at Holy Name Medical Center are available to help explain the different options and ensure you choose the one that best fits your medical needs.

For individuals on Medicare, who are considering choosing a Medicare Advantage plan, please be aware that there is one plan that may restrict you from accessing the high quality services at Holy Name Medical Center and other providers in the region. Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield is offering a plan called Medicare Blue Advantage HMO that considers Holy Name and many other providers non-participating and offers no out of network benefits, meaning you won't be covered for services that are not considered emergencies. Out-of-state providers, including the large medical centers in New York City, are also designated as non-participants and won't be covered.

Many insurance plans consider Holy Name and some out-of-state providers in network, including other Medicare Advantage products offered by Aetna Health Plans, Amerigroup, United Health Care, WellCare and, depending on where you live, different Horizon plans that aren't as restrictive. Several of these products come with a zero-cost premium.

Insurance Explained

As a reminder, the place of service is important because, depending on whether the provider is an office or hospital administering outpatient services, copays and coinsurance will be different. Also remember, all amounts start over at the beginning of each year, even if you keep the same plan.

Anyone with questions about medical coverage is welcome to contact Holy Name's insurance counselors, who offer free, unbiased assistance to help you understand your current benefits and options for the coming year.
