Overview

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent diseases in the United States and the sixth leading cause of death in New Jersey. Yet millions of people with prediabetes, a condition that leads to diabetes without intervention, don't know they have it.

Holy Name Medical Center has become a Diabetes Resource Coordination Center, offering a thorough self-management education program as well as screenings and treatments for the disease. It also provides a list of diabetes prevention programs in Bergen and Passaic counties.

More than 34 million people in the U.S. are living with diabetes and an estimated 88 million individuals have prediabetes, though 8 out of 9 of those individuals are unaware they have the condition, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body does not effectively use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps to regulate sugar in the bloodstream. The disease is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks and strokes, as well as foot amputation.
