The School of Nursing is part of the Holy Name Medical Center healthcare organization. Holy Name Medical Center is a comprehensive 361-bed acute care facility located in Bergen County, which provides technologically advanced, compassionate and personalized care across a continuum that encompasses education, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and wellness maintenance. The School of Nursing aligns our mission with that of the Medical Center to educate nurses to provide safe and effective compassionate patient-centered care.
The Holy Name Medical Center Sister Claire Tynan School of Nursing is named after Sister Claire Tynan who was a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace and a former Director of the School of Nursing who ministered at Holy Name Medical Center for 49 years in various capacities until her passing in 2009. Caring and insightful, she was a dedicated teacher and inspirational presence to generations of nursing students. The school was renamed in 2018 in honor of Sister Claire Tynan.
The education of nurses has always been an integral part of the Holy Name Medical Center healthcare mission. The School of Nursing was founded in 1925 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace. The school began with a class of 13 women and is now one of the largest and most respected coeducational hospital associated diploma schools of nursing in New Jersey.
The Sister Claire Tynan School of Nursing has a long history of providing an outstanding nursing education program resulting in excellent outcomes including high NCLEX licensure pass rates, post-graduation job success, and academic advancement for students who wish to earn higher degrees in nursing. Our student population is reflective of the community we serve with a high level of diversity. Today, approximately 15-20% percent of our students are male and 85% of students choosing to begin their nursing education later in life or as a second career choice.
School of Nursing graduates take the NCLEX licensure exam after successfully completing the curriculum. The 3 year NCLEX licensure exam average pass rate for the RN Program and LPN Programs is 95%.
The Holy Name Medical Center Sister Claire Tynan School of Nursing has moved to a beautiful new location overlooking the Hudson River in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. Our new school location provides students with state of the art classroom and skills laboratory technology on a peaceful and serene campus. Clinical experiences are conducted at Holy Name Medical Center and other nearby healthcare facilities.
As a hospital-associated diploma program, the School of Nursing provides outstanding preparation to students for entry-level positions in nursing. The curriculum includes general education and science courses, in addition to the nursing-specific coursework.
An academic partnership with Saint Peter's University provides students with the opportunity to earn an Associate in Science (AS) degree along with the Diploma in Nursing from Holy Name Medical Center.
Because the School of Nursing is hospital based, the emphasis is on patient care and clinical practice. This is highly desirable, as students spend a great deal of time in clinical courses at Holy Name Medical Center while earning their diploma, making them ready to "hit the ground running" in a variety of patient care settings.
