The General Surgery Residency Program at Holy Name Medical Center strives to create an outstanding community hospital learning environment to train the next generation of surgeons in patient-centered compassionate care. The program will encourage and guide young physicians to achieve academic and clinical excellence. Our five-year program will provide a patient-centered, evidence-based medicine and general surgery educational experience in a setting that guides our residents to achieve their maximal potential personally and professionally.
To produce the next generation of leading surgeons in an academic or community-based setting as well as serve as a model for graduate medical programs worldwide.
Through educational, clinical, and operational training from renowned specialists, plus one-on-one physician mentoring, residents develop the surgical expertise, critical thinking skills, communication knowledge, and leadership training necessary to optimize patient care outcomes.

Our robust curriculum offers breadth in knowledge and depth in specialty. Residents begin their rotations with preoperative and post-operative care and progress with surgical responsibilities throughout the year. By their final year, residents are fully immersed in surgical cases at Holy Name.
In addition to Holy Name, trainees also hold surgical privileges at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and St. Joseph's University Medical Center.
Holy Name's strong emphasis on academics ensures that each student has the educational foundation needed for surgical success. In addition to didactic instruction, students have one-on-one training with renowned surgeons in and out of the operating room. Trainees rotate through the following clinical specialties over four-week periods:
Our Program uses the Russell Berrie Institute of Simulation Learning which was the first accredited simulation center in New Jersey, and offers state of the art surgical simulation training.
We participate in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Carefully follow the ERAS instructions when submitting the required documentation. All applications must be processed through ERAS.
